Residents Work to Clean Little Conestoga Road

Author: Blog Admin  /  Category: Adopt a Highway, Eco

On Sunday, April 26th a group of Wallace Township residents volunteered to be a part of The Great PA Cleanup. Fifteen people, including four under 18 years, walked the 2-mile stretch of Little Conestoga Road from Adams Drive to Whitetail Ridge (almost to Fairview Road). We met around 8:30am and completed the cleanup rather quickly! In just over an hour.

We reported the following statistics, which are down from last year, but we know that is because there was much less trash along our adopted roadside this time.

HERE IS THE REPORTING INFORMATION YOU ENTERED:

Volunteers: 15
Volunteers Under 18: 4
Number Of Communities Involved: 1
Cleanup Type: Litter Cleanup Event
Bags of Trash: 14
Miles of Road: 2

The results of all events will be combined into a statewide statistics for the Great PA Cleanup. Those results will be published on Keep America Beautiful’s website and will serve as a benchmark for future events.

If you are interested in volunteering to help keep our roads beautiful, please contact us and register for the cleanup, or subscribe to the West Glenmoore eNewsletter. The Adopt a Highway/Road program wants us to clean our 2-mile section of LCR 3-4 times a year. We typically run our first cleanup event coinsiding with The Great PA Cleanup in April. Other times we need volunteers is again in mid-summer and then again in October.

Hope to see some new faces during our next cleanup event! It fun to get out there and meet your neighbors and walk the road. You see a lot more than we all do driving at 40 MPH.

How to Safely Cleanup a Broken Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb

Author: Jeff T  /  Category: Eco, Home and Garden

This is something I never really thought about…what happens if you break a compact fluorescent light bulb? Well there is mercury in each bulb and with kids in our house that is a health concern. Of course, I’m not going to stop using CFL’s due to the mercury, they are far superior to regular light bulbs. Besides, the most common risk of mercury exposure to children comes from canned tuna because kids eat so much of it (except if you are living in my house…my kids don’t eat a lot of ‘new’ foods”.

So what should you do if you break a CFL bulb?

Have a game plan…over on Earth911.com and in a recent email I received, they give you a simple 5 step action plan for cleaning up a broken CFL bulb.

1) Open a window before cleaning up, and turn off any forced-air heating or air conditioning.

2) Instead of sweeping or vacuuming, which can spread the mercury around, scoop up the glass fragments and powder. Use sticky tape to pick up remaining glass fragments or powder. Wipe the area clean with a damp paper towel or wet wipes.

3) Dispose of the broken bulb through your local household hazardous waste program or recycling program. If that service is unavailable in your area, place all clean-up materials in a trash container outside the building.

4) Wash your hands after cleaning up.

5) If vacuuming is needed afterwards, when all visible materials have been removed, vacuum the area and dispose of the vacuum bag in a sealed plastic bag. For the next few times you vacuum, turn off any forced-air heating or air conditioning and open a window before doing so.

Recycling Old Light Bulbs

Wow, I actually never thought of this and will definitely be recycling burned out bulbs from now on.

Many companies offer the benefit of allowing you to mail back your old, burnt-out lamps free of charge. You may visit the manufacturers’ site for take-back programs or recycle your lamps using Earth911.

  • NEMA estimates that lamp recycling, in 2003, recovered about 5,720 pounds of mercury.
  • When lamps are recycled at the end of their usable lives, less than one-tenth (<.1) of one ton of mercury is released into the air.

With lamps such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), mercury content needs to be taken into consideration before disposal.

Mercury is an extremely hazardous waste and is a major health concern when it comes in contact with humans and animals. In humans, mercury can cause brain and kidney damage. While many companies hope to have non-mercury CFLs in the near future, right now, such lamps are not widely available.

Take Part in The Great PA Cleanup Event

Hello Friends and Families of Glenmoore!

Adopt a Highway Volunteers of Glenmoore

Adopt a Highway Volunteers of Glenmoore

As spring is almost upon us, I hope you will again join us in our cleanup efforts along our adopted two-mile stretch of Little Conestoga Road. Many of us travel that road daily and have seen the build-up of trash and other debris. Most of this trash makes it’s resting spot along the side of the road as it blows out of truck beds, tossed from windows, as well as from our recycling containers on the windy winter days. Well now is the time for us to help beautify our section of the road and township.

The date that we are shooting for is Sunday, April 26th from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM (going to have to determine a rain date). We usually meet between 8:30 and 9:00 am to pass out trash bags, safety vests and go over some of the regulations imposed by PennDOT. Even if you can only help for an hour or so, that is much appreciated.

We are hoping to have at least 20 people this time for the cleanup event.

The following is a message from the Acting Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection for PA, John Hanger.

President Barack Obama has issued a national call to service, and the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania is a great place to start.

“Change happens from the bottom up because people imagine a world as it should be and are willing to put in the hard work to change the country block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood,” then-candidate Obama said at the ServiceNation Summit on 9/11/2008.

Please consider serving with the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania to cleanup and beautify your community. The success of this annual campaign depends on community volunteers like you who organize and manage cleanup events. Your contributions as event leaders in securing the right locations, rounding up volunteers, arranging for gloves, trash bags and waste disposal, and all of the other tasks, are the keys to success. Without your help, Pennsylvania wouldn’t have the outstanding results the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania has achieved over the last five years, including:

• More than 35 million pounds of trash collected
• 768,925 volunteers
• 69,180 miles of highway cleaned

With your help again this year, we can all make the 2009 Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania a change for the better.

Staples to Offer a Printer Cartridge Exchange Program

Author: Jeff T  /  Category: General

If you are like us and print your own photos you’ll have lots of empty inkjet cartridges to recycle. I’ve looked in the past for a simple recycling solution and never found anything good. I’ve been holding onto a dozen or more old cartridges to wait for a program such as the one Staples is going to be offering.

I just found this article over on Got2BeGreen called Staples’ Ink and Toner Cartridge Recycling Program

Beginning February 1st, Staples will begin to offer a comprehensive ink and toner recycling program. This program is part of their EcoEasy suite of green initiatives. Staples will accept any brand or type of cartridge. In exchange for each recycled cartridge, customers will receive $3 in Staples Rewards. Staples will accept up to 10 cartridges per customer per month.
