I Was Shocked to Learn My Daily Water Consumption

Another short article I read in this month’s Body + Soul was about the average American’s Daily Water Consumption. You will be shocked to find out how much water you use and indirectly use over the course of the day by using the Water Consumption Calculator at H20Conserve.org.

After filling out the online questionnaire I was shocked to learn that I am just about a hundred gallons less than the average American, which is 1,190.5 gallons per day (according to Food & Water Watch). Of this amount, the majority is spent on energy production, cleaning and eating. There are questions about your direct water usage such as, length of shower, watering your lawn or garden and what time of toilet and faucets you have.

So go check out your “Water Footprint“. Leave a comment so we can see how others are conserving water or to see where we match up with others.

Pass on AAA Service and Opt for Better World Club

How many people have AAA Roadside Service plans for their automobiles? We do but that might be changing the next time I’m up for renewal. I just read an article in Body + Soul Magazine (July/August 2008 Number 28), that mentioned joining the Better World Club for your auto and roadside service plan.

The Better World Club will match your AAA rate and waive the enrollment fee if you switch plans. You will also be eligible for gas rebates, deals on hotels and eco-friendly car rentals.

For more information, pricing and what benefits you will receive visit The Better World Club online at www.betterworldclub.com.

Get the most out of your tank

We are heading off for a family vacation very soon and with gas prices having gone up over $0.30 a gallon this past week alone, I have been searching the internet for ways to get every penny’s worth from my tank of gasoline.

- Observe the Speed Limit - Not only is it safer, but I’ve read for every 5 mph over 60 mph you drive, it is like spending an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas. Read the rest of this entry »

Community Volunteers to Clean Up Little Conestoga Road

Adopt a Highway Volunteers of Glenmoore

Jeff and I wanted to thank everyone who volunteered on Saturday, April 26th to help do their part to Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful! We began this program as a result of our daily commute on Little Conestoga Road and having to look at all of the trash each morning and night. We’ve also been trying to become more “green” this year and conscious about recycling, conserving and spreading information about green topics through this blog. Hope you are finding them useful!

Volunteers picking up trash along Little Conestoga Road in Glenmoore, PAWe chose this early spring cleanup date as part of The Great PA Cleanup program sponsored by PENNDOT, which runs from March 1 through May 31.

We successfully cleaned our adopted two-mile stretch  of Little Conestoga Road (in Glenmoore, PA) from Adams Road to Fairview Road (well, almost all the way to Fairview…). Volunteer turnout for our first cleanup was terrific! We had a total of 20 people, including one child,  and collected over 40 bags of trash, most of which were bottles, plastic and other recyclables which we separated as “to be recycled”.  We also found 4 tires, 6 paint cans and various car parts buried in thick thorn bushes.

PENNDOT has been contacted and will clean up the bags of trash. Thanks to Cathy Poole for allowing us to deposit some of the recyclables at the end of her driveway. To anyone that might have kept their gloves and/or vests, please hold on to them for next clean-up! If your vest was one of the several ripped by branches, thorns, etc. we have several more available.

We anticipate our next clean-up to be sometime mid June or July and will send out emails to everyone as it gets closer.

Thanks again to everyone and hope you all enjoyed it!

Ladies - looking for something different to do?

This weekend Jeff and I headed up to the United Sports Training Center for a playdate for our kids. We were taking them to paint plates with another family that has children the same age as ours. When we got to the Pottery Place , I had no idea it would be one of those grown up places where you could paint a nice piece, fire it up in the kiln and end up with a custom made piece. My son picked out a dinosaur from a selection of small items I allowed him to choose from, and I ended up picking a fish for my younger daughter. I have to say, they were really great for 3 1/2 year olds and 19 month olds!! The mommies and daddies ended up painting the second coat on each piece, but it was a fun 20 minutes for the kids.

The Pottery Place offer Ladies Nights where you can bring your own wine and food and paint in a private room. They even offer 10% off if you get a group of 5 or more together. They had a pretty big selection of pottery available - plates, bowls, wine chillers, "piggy" banks, and all sorts of other things. Sounded like a neat idea, so I just wanted to pass it along. Waterless Car Wash?

Huh? This doesn’t even seem possible. I mean, how could you possibly wash a car without using water to rinse off all the soap bubbles? Part of the car washing process is changing into clothes you don’t mind getting soaked as you dip your washing towel into a big bucket of water, then spraying down your car with the hose.

EcoTouch sells a product called waterless car wash for $9.99. You simply use microfiber cloths, spray the product on both the cloth and your car, then wipe. Sounds too good to be true. We’ll try it out and let you know how it turned out. Or if you’ve tried the product let us know by leaving a comment for us and other readers!

A Handful of Green Living Tips for Your Home

Here is a list of Green Living tips that we’ve started to compile from various magazines and web sites. Maybe you’ll find a new tip or two. Also, if you have a tip or something you do please leave us comments.

When drying your clothes in the dryer , try tossing in a couple of dry towels. These towels will help pull moisture out of the other wet clothes, which reduces the number of minutes you’ll need to keep the dryer running.

Wrapping your water heater in an insulating blanket , available for about $10 at any hardware store, can help lower your energy bill by retaining more of the heat produced by the water heater. Another valuable trick is to turn down the thermostat setting on the unit to WARM, or 120 degrees. It is also safer to keep your water temp lower if you have young children in the house.

Put your computer to sleep. If you put your computer in sleep mode when not in use, you can save about $75 a year on your electric bill, according to the EPA . Also, when your computer is not in use, make sure you fully close programs that run in the background looking for updates, such as iTunes and spyware. You can find your computer’s sleep settings and energy management settings in your System Preferences. (If you can’t find that, it is typically on the screensaver settings under Power Settings).

Keep water in your refrigerator. In order to have your refrigerator run efficiently, it should be kept full, but not overstuffed. If you do not have a lot of food in your refrigerator, consider adding a pitcher of water. Not only will this provide instant cold water, but the pitcher acts as an insulator or cold pack would in a cooler. Over and under crowding your refrigerator makes it work harder and is a waste of energy consumption.
