National Herb Day is Approaching

Who would have thought that there is a National Herb Day on October 11, 2008. Well it seems like the editors of Body and Soul Magazine knew about it and wrote up a little article.

HerbDay was conceived of by five nonprofit organizations with interests in herbs and herbalism (the HerbDay Coalition), to raise public awareness about the significance of herbs in our lives and the many ways herbs can be used safely and creatively for health, beauty care, and culinary enjoyment. Greater familiarity with herbs will increase informed use of herbal products and build public support for maintaining personal choice in the use of botanicals.

I did a little more research about Herb Day and found out it started back in 2006. This is the 3rd year people have gathered in different cities to support herbs and herbal treatments.

The entire herbal community is invited to participate actively in HerbDay 2008, either by hosting an event or providing sponsorship in the form of financial support.

To learn more, you can visit HerbDay.org (at the time of this post the web site was not working properly).

New Blog Theme for WestGlenmoore.org

Maybe some of you have seen the new blog theme already. It’s been up since last weekend. I am using a NEW magazine type theme that I will be working on over the next week or so to improve the functionality of the site and allow better searching and locating of certain blog posts.

The WestGlenmoore.org site and webblog is powered by the WordPress blog platform and the theme was developed by Kabatology.

Hopefully the change is OK and you will find it more useful. I will be modifying the color schemes and adding back the images or using new images I’ve taken around the area.

I will make another solicitation to residents that want to offer any articles to the blog to contact me. I will be happy to spend time teaching you how to use WordPress to add contact to this blog or even start up your own blog.

Pass on AAA Service and Opt for Better World Club

How many people have AAA Roadside Service plans for their automobiles? We do but that might be changing the next time I’m up for renewal. I just read an article in Body + Soul Magazine (July/August 2008 Number 28), that mentioned joining the Better World Club for your auto and roadside service plan.

The Better World Club will match your AAA rate and waive the enrollment fee if you switch plans. You will also be eligible for gas rebates, deals on hotels and eco-friendly car rentals.

For more information, pricing and what benefits you will receive visit The Better World Club online at www.betterworldclub.com.

Get the most out of your tank

We are heading off for a family vacation very soon and with gas prices having gone up over $0.30 a gallon this past week alone, I have been searching the internet for ways to get every penny’s worth from my tank of gasoline.

- Observe the Speed Limit - Not only is it safer, but I’ve read for every 5 mph over 60 mph you drive, it is like spending an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas. Read the rest of this entry »

Tax rebates to start arriving Monday

The federal government, eager to boost the flagging economy, will start distributing special tax rebates on Monday - five days earlier than expected, the Treasury Department said Thursday.

My thoughts: I think what would help boost the crumbling economy would be to release some of the oil reserves to offset the ever increase in gas prices.  My prediction, $3.89/gal by Memorial Day Weekend.

Confused About Recycling Symbols on Plastic?

PETE has SPI resin ID code 1 Image via Wikipedia

Tonight’s browsing of some of my usual sites landed me on The Daily Green and one of their great articles about recycling plastic and what ALL of those symbols on the containers mean.

They came up with a Guide to Recycling Codes which can be viewed here .

But here is a little snippet of what the code looks like, what type of plastic it is, how to recycle and what that specific type of plastic is recycled into.

Number 1 Plastics
PET or PETE (polyethylene terephthalate)
Found in: Soft drink, water and beer bottles; mouthwash bottles; peanut butter containers; salad dressing and vegetable oil containers; ovenable food trays.
Recycling: Picked up through most curbside recycling programs.
Recycled into: Polar fleece , fiber, tote bags, furniture, carpet, paneling, straps, (occasionally) new containers

Anyone Travel? Don’t Leave Home Without Calling

US Airways plane at w:Philadelphia International Airport Image via Wikipedia

I’ve had this scrap of paper on my office desk for quite some time and with the recent American Airlines flight cancellations and the typical delay in and out of Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) I wanted to share this info.

Many of you probably use our home or work Internet connections to check flight status prior to leaving, but what if you are not able to check via the Internet and you don’t have a smartphone or Blackberry with browser capabilities. No problem, there is a tollfree phone number that you can call to get up to the minute flight and gate information.

Simply call 1-800-FLIGHTS (1800flights.net ) and they have flight status information for 432 commercial airports in the United States and 173 international airports.

New Blog Theme Coming Soon

Just wanted to let other Glenmoore residents know that a new theme for our blog is in development and will be live in the next week or so.  I tend to work on this site in the evening so with work projects, taking care of two kids and everything else I need a few days.  We’re going to keep it as more of a “magazine” theme to give highlights to our main areas and topics such as, Green Living Tips, Adopt Little Conestoga Road, Community news and issues, and everything else.

If you have an idea please share by leaving us a comment or contact us at the link at the top of the page.
