I Was Shocked to Learn My Daily Water Consumption

Another short article I read in this month’s Body + Soul was about the average American’s Daily Water Consumption. You will be shocked to find out how much water you use and indirectly use over the course of the day by using the Water Consumption Calculator at H20Conserve.org.

After filling out the online questionnaire I was shocked to learn that I am just about a hundred gallons less than the average American, which is 1,190.5 gallons per day (according to Food & Water Watch). Of this amount, the majority is spent on energy production, cleaning and eating. There are questions about your direct water usage such as, length of shower, watering your lawn or garden and what time of toilet and faucets you have.

So go check out your “Water Footprint“. Leave a comment so we can see how others are conserving water or to see where we match up with others.

Save The Rain to Water Your Plants and Garden This Summer

For those of you that have a garden or lots of flower beds, etc, I’m sure you know the difficulty of continually having to water them in the summer months of Chester County, when we get no rain. Well here is a great solution to be able to conserve water and use Mother Nature’s rain to water your plants later on this summer.

rain-barrels-01I probably should have found this info earlier in the Spring and blogged about it then but I didn’t. So here it is now.

Build your own rain barrel to collect the rain. There is a great step-by-step article posted on DIY Life that walks you through the steps to make a rain collection system.

Here is the link to Rain Barrels Made Easy article by Bill Volk. This does not seem to difficult to do and the rewards of conserving water and keeping your plants and grass growing in the hot summer months are worth every penny you put into this weekend project.

If anyone has plastic barrels or knows of a place to get them please leave a comment so others can be informed.

Here is another site I found that had shopping list and instructions. Cumberland Co, PA Rain Barrel Program (has a list of parts and instructions)

If you have other eco tips that you would like to share please contact us and we’ll be happy to post your story, or make you and author on this blog!
